Technology has made green printing options a possibility for many businesses and companies. However, using 100-percent recycled paper or soy and vegetable inks is only half of the green printing and mailing battle.
Small businesses that rely on direct mail to reach both new and old consumers often end up using a large quantity of paper that a portion of recipients will just end up throwing in the trash.
However, a new program endorsed by the City of Chicago is hoping to reduce some of the paper waste and help the city reach its goal of diverting 90 percent of its waste from landfills by 2020 as part of its Chicago Climate Action Plan.
The program will encourage consumers to sign up with Catalog Choice, which allows consumers to select their mail preferences and stop the delivery of unwanted phone books, coupons, credit card solicitations and other mail pieces, Center Square Journal reports.
The San Francisco is also trying to reduce paper waste through a proposal to stop delivery of the Yellow Pages. It has been met by significant opposition from small business groups that claim the medium is integral to their marketing and advertising.
