A die presses the foil onto the material and the heat activates the adhesive.

Although standard gold and metallic finishes are the most commonly used, a wide selection of additional foil colors are also available to provide that unique reflective metallic effect. Various finishes such as marble and pearl effects are available as well.  Another great thing about foil is that you’re not limited to just metallic effects. You can find anything from gloss to dull, fluorescents, holographic and even clear.
