While printing and mailing strategies may be struggling to find a firm foothold in the new digital era of social media and email marketing, many companies are making an effort to reduce their carbon footprints by combining the two.
Electronic Arts, the world's largest video game publisher, is reportedly halting the manufacture of printed game manuals, Time Techland writer Matt Peckham explains. However, this doesn't mean players will no longer be able to access print manuals.
Consumers will now have the choice of accessing the instruction packets via digital mediums, giving them the opportunity to print out the manual, read it on their mobile phones or read it through the game's main menu.
Furthermore, Peckham writes that EA asserts that allowing consumers to select how they view the manual will result in a 40 percent reduction in its printed packaging materials.
While the move may save the company some extra dollars and paper, not all users are in support of it. According to a poll by the website IGN, 58.9 percent of users said they would miss the paper game manuals.
