Aveda honors environmentally responsible magazine printing

In paper-heavy print mediums such as magazine and catalog printing, implementing environmentally friendly and sustainable practices can seem like a challenge.

However, two magazines, Mother Earth and Experience Life, were recently honored for their environmental responsibility by the Aveda Environmental Award for Magazines, which gave prizes for three categories: best paper printing, best commitment and best distribution.

"The magazine winners of the Aveda Environmental Award stand out in an industry where less than two-percent of North American magazines use any recycled paper content at all," said Frank Locantore, Green America Better Paper Project director. "Despite attempts by some in the paper and printing industry to confuse the issue, these magazines understand the environmental benefits of using recycled paper."

Furthermore, the statement noted that if North American magazines included only 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper into their production efforts, nearly 1.5 tons of wood would be saved, or more than 10 million trees.

Businesses are even targeting their own printing operations to reduce unnecessary wastefulness. A software program, called GreenPrint, tells individuals how much money and trees they are saving by cutting out pages.
